January 16 to 17 2010
The Highlands Dxpedition at 'Crocker Range' was jointly organised by the MCMC, the licensing authority, members of the state's amateur radio clubs like BARC and SARS as well as a number of ham enthusiasts and SWLs. Support for this event was overwhelming with over 200 stations attending from as far off as West Malaysia and Brunei. The main event was spearheaded by NBWDX groups, to activating the 9M4STA special call sign for the first time on January 16th 2010. Operation was conducted on both multiband and multi mode.
The Crocker Range is a range of mountains that forms the backbone of the state of Sabah. The DXing event was held at the highest point with vehicle access, located 90kms or a two hour drive from the city of Kota Kinabalu at approximately1,800 metre ASL. The site was located within the Crocker Range National Park, which has a rich bio-diversity of flora and fauna. The park is also home to the rare slipper orchid, which is endemic to the state but can be found here in abundance.
This Dxpedition was the first in Malaysia to be organised at a high altitude and abnormal condition. Temperatures at night dropped to low teens and with no public amenities available, all equipment, supplies and other necessities had to be brought in for the event.
Regardless of the conditions at the site, all participants had a good time "talking to the world"
